Before you go shopping for an internet service, it is crucial to understand the different types of internet services in the market today. Doing so will help you in choosing an internet service that is best suited for you. Common types you will find include DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), Satellite, Cable, and Fiber optic.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

DSL is an internet service where connections are through unused telephone wires. The wires will not cause any interruption to one’s telephone service. The speed if DSL internet service is usually determined by the distance from the switching station. If you are close enough then your internet will be very fast, but if you are far, it might work a bit slow. Thus it is advisable to go for a DSL connection if the switching station is close to you. This should be your determining factor.

DSL makes use of two technologies. One is the Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). This is used primarily for the residential customers. ADSL will provide a faster speed for the downstream that the upstream. This makes it suitable for those who receive a lot of data but do not send much. The second type is the Symmetrical digital subscriber line (SDSL). SDSL is used for business services which require a significant bandwidth for both upstream and downstream.

Satellite

The satellite is usually used in the remote areas. It’s kind of the replacement of dial-up internet in these areas.  The speed is affected by several factors including the service package, provider, the weather and the position of the orbiting satellite. It is much faster that dial up the internet but can be interrupted by weather conditions.

Cable

Cable is the internet service that is provided by the cable TV provider. Users in a certain geographical area share a connection bandwidth and thus the speed is affected by the number of users. If many people are using the internet, then the speed will be low. The speed may also be affected by the type of the cable modem and the cable network.

You will be able to access the internet by use of a cable modem which has two connections, one to the computer and the other to the cable wall outlet. You can still watch your TV while using the cable internet.

Fiber

This is the most modern and fastest internet service. Fiber optic uses a technology that converts the electrical signals carrying data into light and then sends the light through glass fiber. The transmission speed for fiber is higher than that of cable and DSL. Fiber optic transmission speed will vary depending on a number of factors such as how close one is to the service provider and how the service is configured.

The broadband connections above are much faster compared to the traditional dial-up internet. You can always search broadband comparison sites and find broadband plans by rating to select the best plan that fits your requirement. With the faster internet, you can accomplish so much more, and it also makes it easy to network computers within your home or the office. However, dial-up internet is still in use and is a cheap source of internet for those with a tight budget.
